Getting Started with CastBuddy

CastBuddy is a powerful Chrome extension that makes it easy to discover and cast videos from any website to your Chromecast or Google TV

The Castbuddy website complements the Castbuddy Chrome extension. To enable its functionality, first install the extension from the Chrome web store.

The Castbuddy website complements the Castbuddy Chrome extension. To enable its functionality, first install the extension from the Chrome web store.

Discovering Videos

Browse to a Website with Videos
Visit any website that contains videos. CastBuddy works with most video formats and websites.
For example, you can try our sample videos page to test the functionality.

Check the CastBuddy Icon
When CastBuddy finds videos on the current page, it will show the number of videos found on the extension icon in your browser toolbar.

Pro Tip

CastBuddy automatically scans pages as you browse. If videos don't appear immediately, try refreshing the page or waiting a few seconds for the scan to complete.

Casting Videos to Your TV

Open CastBuddy
Click on the CastBuddy icon in your browser toolbar to open the CastBuddy interface.

Cast a Video
Click the "Cast" icon next to any video you want to play on your TV. This will open Chrome's built-in Cast device selection dialog.

Select Your Cast Device
Choose the Chromecast, Google TV, or other Cast-enabled device where you want to play the video.

Pro Tip

Once a video starts playing on your TV, you can close the browser tab or even shut down your computer. The video will continue playing on your TV.

Controlling Playback

Access Playback Controls
While a video is casting, you can control playback from the CastBuddy interface. Open CastBuddy by clicking the extension icon in your browser toolbar.

Available Controls
  • Play/Pause: Toggle playback of the current video
  • Seek: Jump to a specific point in the video using the progress bar
  • Volume: Adjust the volume of your Cast device
  • Stop Casting: End the current casting session
Pro Tip

If player controls are missing when the video starts, refresh your browser using Ctrl+R (or CMD+R on Mac).

Saving Videos for Later

Save a Video
In the CastBuddy interface, click the "+" icon next to any video you want to save for later.

Access Saved Videos
Click the "Saved" tab in the CastBuddy interface to view all your saved videos. These videos will remain in your list even after you close your browser.

Manually Adding Video URLs

Open the Add Video Dialog
In the CastBuddy interface, click the "Add Video" button in the top-right corner.

Enter the Video URL
Paste the direct URL of the video you want to cast. This should be a direct link to a video file (e.g., ending in .mp4, .webm, etc.) or a supported streaming URL.

Cast or Save the Video
After adding the URL, you can immediately cast it to your TV or save it for later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't CastBuddy finding videos on a particular website?

CastBuddy works with most standard video formats and players, but some websites use custom or protected video players that may not be detectable. In these cases, you can try:

  • Refreshing the page and waiting for the scan to complete
  • Right-clicking on the video and looking for a "Copy video URL" option
  • Using the "Add Video" feature to manually enter the video URL
Can I cast videos to devices other than Chromecast?

CastBuddy works with any Google Cast-compatible device, including:

  • Chromecast devices
  • Google TV devices
  • Android TV devices with Chromecast built-in
  • Smart displays like Google Nest Hub
  • Smart speakers with displays
Why does the video quality look different on my TV?

The video quality depends on several factors:

  • The original quality of the video source
  • Your internet connection speed
  • The capabilities of your Cast device

CastBuddy attempts to cast at the highest quality available, but some websites may limit the quality of their videos when casting.

I am not able to see Player controls?

Try reloading your Brower Tab by clicking CTRL + R ( CMD + R on mac)
